About the Mandela Washington Fellowship 2024
The Mandela Washington Fellowship 2024 will bring up to 700 young leaders to the United States in the summer of 2024.
Fellows will receive full sponsorship, covering all travel, accommodation, and meals for an intensive executive-style program.

This program aims to develop skills and prepare Fellows to lead in their respective fields and communities.
The United States Department of State and IREX are seeking academic, professional, and regional experts to review and evaluate applications for the 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.
The Mandela Washington Fellowship 2024 brings young leaders to the United States for academic coursework and leadership training, creating opportunities for collaboration between Fellows and U.S. citizens.
This collaboration aims to foster economic growth, strengthen democratic governance, and promote peace and security across Africa and the United States.

Reviewers will evaluate approximately 50 applications based on set guidelines and a scoring rubric.

Requirements:
The Mandela Washington Fellowship 2024 is open to young African leaders who meet the following criteria:
— Ages 25 to 35 by the application deadline; exceptional applicants aged 21-24 will also be considered
— Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English (additional guidance will be provided for deaf applicants)
Citizenship Eligibility:
Applicants must hold citizenship in one of the following countries:
Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, or Zimbabwe. Applicants will not be discriminated against based on race, color, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
Ideal Reviewers:
Ideal reviewers are academics and/or professionals with expertise in one or more of the Fellowship’s thematic areas (business, civic engagement, or public management), or who have experience working in Africa or on sub-Saharan African issues. U.S.

Government employees and Fellowship Alumni are eligible to review applications, but individuals applying for the 2024 Fellowship are ineligible to serve as reviewers.
Mandela Washington Fellowship 2024 Duration and Benefits:
The Fellowship provides a fully funded opportunity to:
— Attend a six-week Leadership Institute at a U.S. college or university to exchange experiences with and learn from U.S. citizens and fellow participants.
— Explore industries beyond your current work and expand your expertise.
— Participate in a Summit with other young African leaders.
— Engage with U.S. Government, civic, and business leaders.
— Strengthen your work through new connections, skills, and ideas.
— Join a continental and global Alumni Network to collaborate on innovative solutions to common challenges.
Selection Criteria:
Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria (listed in no particular order):
— Demonstrated leadership and accomplishments in business, civic engagement, or public service.
— Commitment to public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
— Ability to collaborate effectively in diverse groups and respect differing viewpoints.
— Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
— Positive and energetic attitude.
— Knowledge of and professional experience in the preferred sector/track.
— Commitment to return to Africa and apply acquired leadership skills and training for the benefit of their country or community upon returning home.
