About the 2025/2026 Ireland Fellows Program: Fully Funded Study in Ireland
The Ireland Fellows Programme allows early to mid-career professionals from eligible countries, who demonstrate leadership potential, to receive a prestigious, high-quality education contributing to capacity building.
It provides selected students with the opportunity to pursue a fully funded one-year master’s level programme at a higher education institution (HEI) in Ireland.
The programme promotes gender equality, equal opportunity, and embraces diversity. Its development policy aligns with SDG 16, focusing on creating effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.

This programme encourages applications from a wide range of backgrounds, including applicants with disabilities and those from minority or disadvantaged groups.
Efforts are made to increase the representation of female applicants and individuals whose gender identity does not conform to traditional binary norms.
The Programme aims to cultivate future leaders, enhance national capacity to achieve SDG goals domestically, and foster positive relationships with Ireland.
Graduates are expected to contribute to capacity building in their home countries upon their return, leveraging the skills acquired through the programme to become leaders in their fields.

Additionally, participants are encouraged to establish enduring personal and professional ties with Ireland, promoting institutional connections.
Funded entirely by the Irish Government and administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Ireland Fellows Programme aligns with Ireland’s commitments under Global Ireland and its national strategy for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Benefits of the programme include coverage of tuition fees, airfare, accommodation, and living expenses.
Eligible master’s programmes typically start in August or September each year and last between 10 to 16 months, depending on the specific programme.
Eligibility
To qualify for an Ireland Fellows Programme – Africa award beginning in the academic year 2024, applicants must:
— Be a citizen of one of the following countries: Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.
— Eligible courses include fields such as agriculture, health, education, human rights, computer science, engineering, business, and others listed in the Directory of Eligible Programmes.
— Have at least two to three years of significant work experience directly relevant to their proposed programme(s) of study, depending on their country of origin (details on Page 8).
— Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited and government-recognized higher education institution, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (equivalent to a first class honor or second class honor, Grade 1; a second class honor, Grade 2 may be accepted with substantial directly relevant work experience). The degree must have been awarded in 2012 or later.
— Not already possess a master’s degree or higher, or be currently enrolled in or scheduled to start such a program in the academic year 2023/24.
— Intend to begin a new master’s level programme in Ireland no earlier than August 2024.
— Demonstrate leadership potential, a commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their home country, and a willingness to foster positive relations with Ireland.

— Have identified and selected three relevant programmes from the Directory of Eligible Programmes based on their academic and professional background.
— Understand the academic and English language proficiency requirements for all chosen programmes.
— Not have previously applied to the Ireland Fellows Programme more than once.
— Be available to undertake the Fellowship during the academic year 2024/2025.
Additionally, applications are by invitation only in the following countries:
Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eswatini, Eritrea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Zambia.
This restriction applies to government department staff and NGOs working in partnership with Irish Aid, and personnel of organizations aligned with Irish Aid’s development strategy in their country, as identified by the Embassy of Ireland.
