Qualified health professionals with an interest in public health and a commitment to public service are encouraged to apply.
SAFETP provides a full-time two-year residency program, offering training and hands-on experience in applied epidemiology.
The program aims to cultivate specialized skills for enhancing public health surveillance systems, managing outbreaks, and conducting field studies to tackle priority public health issues.
Training primarily occurs through on-the-job service and learning activities. Upon successful completion, trainees are granted a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Field Epidemiology from either the University of Pretoria or the University of the Witwatersrand.
Requirements:
The upcoming group of trainees will commence in January 2025 and conclude in December 2026. Interested qualified professionals should submit their applications before July 1, 2024. Applicants sponsored by their employers must ensure that the funding covers their salaries/stipends, along with university registration and tuition fees for the two-year training period.
Individuals currently employed by the South African government at different levels, intending to take study leave for the program and then resume their positions, must obtain written approval from their respective departments.
Limited bursaries/scholarships may be offered to selected applicants who meet specific criteria.
Work Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a health-related field or other relevant fields.
- Experience within a public health system is preferred.
- Prior experience in health-related research is advantageous.
Educational Requirements:
- Medical, veterinary, or dentistry degree; OR
- Doctorate degree in a medical/health-related field; OR
- Master’s degree in a medical or health-related field; OR
- Bachelor’s degree with prior research experience.

Other Key Requirements: - In addition to meeting the work and educational criteria, applicants must:
- Be registered with their relevant professional organizations.
- Demonstrate fluency in spoken and written English.
- Possess computer literacy skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite for communication, word processing, analysis, presentation, and report generation.
- Familiarity with a statistical package is advantageous.
- Hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to operate a rented vehicle.
- Provide documentation of their current physical residential address for future reference, such as Domicilium citandi et executandi.
