Applications are currently being accepted for the World in Serbia Scholarship.
The Government of the Republic of Serbia has announced an exciting opportunity for aspiring scholars from Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member countries, including South Africa, to pursue Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programs at selected higher education institutions for the 2024/2025 academic year.
This initiative highlights Serbia’s dedication to promoting international academic collaboration and supporting talent from various backgrounds.
The scholarships cover a range of academic pursuits, from undergraduate to doctoral levels, providing a platform for ambitious individuals to advance their knowledge and skills in various fields.

However, it is important to note that all levels of study will be conducted in Serbian, offering participants a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture of Serbia while pursuing their academic goals.
This initiative not only facilitates academic exchange but also promotes cultural understanding and collaboration among nations within the NAM framework.
By welcoming students from member countries, including South Africa, Serbia is building a global community of scholars who can advance knowledge and address shared challenges in our interconnected world.
The scholarship program is a testament to Serbia’s commitment to education and reflects its dedication to nurturing future leaders and fostering international cooperation.
Eligibility Criteria:
– Must be a citizen of a NAM member orobserver state.
– Must be nominated by the South African Government through the Department of Higher Education and Training.
– Must be under the age of:
– 21 for first-degree studies – Bachelor’s academic studies and Bachelor’s vocational studies.
– 25 for specialist vocational studies of the first degree and for second-degree studies: Master’s degree academic studies, Master’s degree vocational studies, and specialist academic studies.
– 35 for third-degree studies – Doctoral academic studies.
Applicants must have completed four years of academic or vocational studies for a Bachelor’s program, and meet the following criteria for a Master’s program:
– 60 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits, with a diploma from a higher education institution that has at least 240 ECTS credits.
– 120 ECTS credits, with a diploma from a higher education institution that has at least 180 ECTS credits.

To enroll in a Doctoral program, candidates must hold an appropriate diploma from a higher education institution, obtained through Master’s or integrated academic studies, with at least 300 ECTS credits.
To enroll in a Specialist or Master’s vocational program, candidates must hold a suitable diploma from a higher education institution with at least 180 ECTS credits.
Candidates must be proficient in English or Serbian. All applicants must be in good health and provide a medical certificate, issued within the last 6 months, confirming they are free from infectious or contagious diseases, along with a negative HIV test.
Benefits of the World In Serbia Scholarship:
The World in Serbia scholarship provides selected applicants with the following benefits:
– A free preparatory course in the Serbian language (including an online course and an intensive course upon arrival in Serbia);
– Tuition for undergraduate or vocational studies, specialist vocational studies, master’s programs, or doctoral programs;
– A monthly stipend of 15,000 Serbian dinars (approximately R 2165.01);
– Coverage for student accommodation and food expenses;
– Compulsory health insurance (up to the age of 26);
– A residence visa; and
– Free verification of secondary and higher education credentials.

Successful applicants will also receive assistance with travel costs to and from Serbia, as well as a settlement allowance from the department.
How to Apply for the World in Serbia Scholarship:
Prospective candidates must complete the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technological Development application form, provide the necessary supporting documents, and send them to Internationalscholarships@dhet.gov.za.
The required documents include:
– Completed application form with two selected study programs
– CV with a cover letter
– A certified copy of your passport
– Certified copies of all post-secondary qualification certificates
– Certified copies of all post-secondary academic transcripts
– An English or Serbian language proficiency certificate
– Medical certificate, dated within the last 6 months, confirming that you do not have any infectious or contagious diseases
– A negative HIV test
All documents must be clear and in PDF format (photos of documents will not be accepted).
– Please note that after successfully passing the entrance exam and being admitted to a specific program, scholarship recipients will not be allowed to switch to a different program.
