Introducing theYale Drama Series Playwriting Competition: $10,000 Prize
Applications are now open for the 2025 Yale Drama Series Playwriting Competition. The winning play will be chosen by the current judge, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.
The annual winner will receive the David Charles Horn Prize of $10,000, publication of their manuscript by Yale University Press, and participation in a celebratory event.

Publication and the prize are contingent upon the playwright agreeing to the terms of the publishing agreement.
Requirements:
— This competition is limited to plays written in English. Submissions from around the world are welcome.
— Submitted plays must be original, full-length works that have not been previously published, with a minimum of 65 pages. Plays under 65 pages will not be considered.
— Translations, adaptations, musicals, and children’s plays are not eligible.
— The Yale Drama Series aims to support emerging playwrights. A playwright may win the competition only once.
— Each playwright may submit only one manuscript per year. Only manuscripts written by a single playwright are eligible.
— Plays that have been professionally produced or published are ineligible.

— Works that have had a workshop, reading, or non-professional production, or have been published as an actor’s edition, will be considered.
— Plays must not be under option, commissioned, or scheduled for professional production or publication at the time of submission.
— Manuscripts must be typed/word-processed and page numbered. Plays with images will not be accepted.
— The Yale Drama Series reserves the right to reject any manuscript for any reason.
— The judge retains the right not to select a winner in any given year and to determine the ineligibility of any winner based on the spirit of the competition and the author’s achievements.
Electronic Submissions:
The Yale Drama Series Competition strongly encourages electronic submission. Submitting electronically ensures immediate confirmation of receipt and allows you to check the status of your entry.
Hardcopy Submissions
While electronic submission is strongly encouraged for the Yale Drama Series Competition, we will accept hardcopies if electronic submission is not feasible.
Submissions for the 2025 competition must be postmarked between June 15, 2024, and September 8, 2024.

If submitting a hard copy of your play, ensure the manuscript begins with a title page displaying the play’s title, your name, address, telephone number, email address (if applicable), and page count.
Include a second title page with the play’s title, a brief 2-3 sentence description, a character list, and an acts and scenes breakdown.
Please provide a brief biography on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.
Do not bind or staple the manuscript.
Do not send the only copy of your work, as manuscripts cannot be returned after the competition.
If you require acknowledgment of receipt, include an email address on the title page or a stamped, self-addressed postcard.
