About the NIHR INSIGHT Research Masters Studentships 2024
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has announced funding for the ‘INSIGHT’ Inspiring Students into Research’ Studentships program, which will commence in summer 2024.
This innovative initiative spans three years and is part of the NIHR Academy’s efforts to develop a highly skilled research workforce capable of advancing health and care research for societal and economic benefit.
The NIHR INSIGHT program for South West Central is one of 12 regional programs and is a collaboration between the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and Bournemouth University.

Together, these institutions serve over 6,000 pre-registration and 4,000 post-registration students across more than 15 health and care professions.
The South West Central region includes:
— Gloucestershire
— Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire
— Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire
— Dorset
The program involves more than 20 collaborators from health and social care providers and NIHR organizations.
Its goal is to establish collaborative partnerships and student networks throughout the region.
Eligible Fields
Undergraduate or graduate students pursuing registration and early career professionals registered with any of the following regulatory bodies (excluding doctors and dentists) are eligible to participate in the NIHR INSIGHT program:
— Academy for Healthcare Science
— General Chiropractic Council
— General Dental Council
— General Medical Council
— General Optical Council
— General Osteopathic Council
— General Pharmaceutical Council
— Health and Care Professions Council
— Nursing and Midwifery Council
— Social Work England
— UK Public Health Register
This includes allied health workers, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, healthcare scientists, social workers, and public health specialists.
Eligibility Criteria
Early career professionals who have completed their training and have up to five years of practice experience are eligible for these competitive awards.
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
— Seeking registration with or progress toward one of the specified regulatory organizations.

— Recently graduated or have up to five years of experience working as a licensed health or care provider.
— Considering applying to UWE Bristol or Bournemouth University for a master’s degree in health and care research.
— A bachelor’s honors degree in a relevant field with a 2:1 or better is typically required. A minimum of 12 months of relevant professional experience or equivalent qualifications may also be considered.
— Non-native English speakers need an IELTS (Academic) score of at least 7.0.
— This adaptable, student-focused program offers opportunities to collaborate with external stakeholders and a robust support network, developing leadership and research capacity.
Applicants will be selected for interviews based on their application forms. Interviews will be conducted online by a panel from South West Central, who will select the recipients of the Research Masters Studentships.
Benefits of the NIHR INSIGHT Research Masters Studentships 2024
The studentships cover tuition fees and provide a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£19,237 for full-time study and £9,619 for part-time study in 2024-2025). Both full-time and part-time studentships are available.
There will be a series of activities designed to familiarize students and early-career health and care professionals with research and its implementation.
These activities aim to enhance their professional careers and highlight their research achievements.

NIHR INSIGHT will fund 30 research masters studentships annually in the South West Central region for the next three years.

Explore the MRes Health and Care Research program at UWE Bristol, which offers comprehensive training in health and care research methodologies and methods.
This program emphasizes practical application to influence practice and policy, including mandatory modules (150 credits) and optional modules (30 credits).
The student-centered approach combines traditional and online learning methods for a well-rounded educational experience.
Additionally, Bournemouth University is accepting applications for its MRes program starting in September 2024.
The deadline for applications to both universities is 5 pm on Wednesday, August 14th, 2024.
