Introducing the Clooney Foundation Fellowship Program 2024
Applications are currently open for the Clooney Foundation for Justice’s (CFJ) Second Year Fellowship Program for African Women Lawyers in 2024.
Building on the success of its inaugural year, CFJ has initiated the second year of its Waging Justice for Women Fellowship.
This program aims to empower and support early-career women lawyers in Africa by providing them with a competitive annual salary sponsored by CFJ and opportunities to collaborate with prominent human rights organizations across the continent to advocate for gender justice for women and girls.

The Fellowship is conducted in partnership with the Legal Empowerment Fund at the Fund for Global Human Rights.
These prestigious fellowships are full-time, year-long opportunities, scheduled to take place from January 2025 to December 2025.
Eligibility Criteria:
— A valid law degree
— Practicing Certificate
Admission to practice as a lawyer in at least one of the countries where the host organizations operate is required.

Fellows must be admitted to practice as lawyers in the respective country where their chosen host organization is based.
Work Experience
Work Experience
Minimum of two years of legal experience after qualifying. (As this fellowship targets early-career women lawyers, candidates with more than five years of post-qualification legal experience may be less likely to be considered.)
Preference given to those with experience in women’s rights and working with human rights organizations.
Citizenship or Work Authorization
Citizenship or Work Authorization
Must be a citizen or have work authorization in Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, or Liberia.
Costs associated with international relocation and obtaining work authorization will not be covered.
Skills/Competencies:
— Experience working with survivors and/or affected communities
— Ability to integrate gender and child-sensitive perspectives into substantive work
— Interest in gender equality and women’s rights

— Dedication to the mission and objectives of the Clooney Foundation for Justice and related host organizations
— Demonstrated capability to conduct thorough legal analysis and fact-finding
— Strong research, writing, and verbal communication skills
— Initiative-driven with strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities
— Proven commitment to social justice and human rights, with a creative approach to developing strategies for advancing justice in our key focus areas.
Willingness to travel is essential
Fluency in English is required; proficiency in other working languages relevant to the host organizations’ countries is preferred.
Benefits of the Clooney Foundation Fellowship Program 2024
The CFJ’s second-year fellowship program offers the following benefits:
— Each of the 10 fellows will be assigned to a different organization throughout Africa.
— Fellows will dedicate one year to collaborating with their host organizations on various issues concerning women’s and girls’ rights.
They support at least one strategic litigation case aimed at advancing women’s and girls’ rights in national, regional, or international courts, or UN human rights mechanisms.

The fellows receive mentorship, monthly online training, and access to prominent lawyers, activists, and scholars from across Africa and around the world.
