About the World Climate Research Programme
The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) has introduced a research fellowship focused on Africa. This fellowship is part of WCRP’s new Global South Fellowship program.
The aim of the Global South Fellowship program is to provide early to mid-career researchers from the Global South an opportunity to advance their own research activities related to the World Climate Research Programme.
This initiative aims to enhance climate research efforts within their respective regions.

Fellowship topics may cover a broad spectrum of scientific inquiries outlined in the WCRP Science and Implementation Plan, aligned with the priorities of WCRP activities including Core Projects and Lighthouse Activities.
For the 2024 call, WCRP is inviting research proposals from early to mid-career candidates based in Africa.
These proposals must be backed by a host institution committed to ensuring that the selected candidate can dedicate full-time effort to the fellowship project throughout the agreed fellowship period at their institution.

Successful projects are expected to tackle crucial gaps in African climate research linked to WCRP, contribute to climate action in Africa, foster a community of practice, and have the potential to establish a lasting legacy for future endeavors.
For instance, proposals could stimulate the development of communities of practice focused on the interface between climate and policy.
Another example could involve promoting climate literacy or addressing discrepancies in climate information among policymakers and various stakeholders.
Successful projects must propose research with the potential to bring about significant change and establish a basis for African researchers to take the lead in a WCRP (legacy) project.
Proposals should also include references to relevant WCRP core activities, as applicable.
Award details
The leadership of the World Climate Research Programme has allocated CHF 50,000 for a Global South Fellowship focusing on Africa. The award aims to support the salary of one researcher.
Each proposal must include a comprehensive description of the research project, along with a budget detailing how the funds will be used and for what period.
Additionally, proposals should indicate if there are other resources that could be utilized.
The fellowship is planned to ideally commence in late 2024 (pending negotiations).
The proposal must include a letter of commitment from the host institution, signed and dated.
Eligible costs may include:
(1) salary for the candidate commensurate with the host institution’s employment costs;
(2) travel support for attendance at a relevant WCRP meeting and essential local travel for research purposes;
(3) purchase of an approved laptop. Institutional overhead costs can be negotiated if necessary. However, funding for equipment is not provided.
The successful candidate for the World Climate Research Programme fellowship will be chosen by the WCRP fellowship selection committee based on the submitted proposal and a subsequent oral or online interview, both of which must demonstrate excellence and clear alignment with WCRP’s strategic objectives.
