Contrary to popular belief, there are many scholarships available abroad for U.S. citizens.
These include scholarships offered by both the U.S. government and foreign governments, as well as international scholarships for Americans provided by prestigious universities.
Additionally, various organizations offer scholarship opportunities for U.S. students to pursue their studies and internships abroad.
Scholarships Offered by U.S. and Foreign Governments:
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (Multiple Countries):
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides financial support for U.S. undergraduate students with limited financial means to study or intern abroad, equipping them with skills crucial to U.S. national security and economic prosperity.
The program encourages students to study in diverse regions worldwide. Scholarships range from $100 to $5,000, with an opportunity to receive a Critical Need Language Award of up to $8,000.
Global Wales Postgraduate Scholarships for International Students (UK):
The Global Wales Postgraduate Scholarship program offers scholarships of up to £10,000 to international students from countries like Vietnam, India, the USA, and EU nations to pursue full-time master’s programs in Wales.
Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program (France):
The Eiffel Scholarship Program, created by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, helps French higher education institutions attract top foreign students for master’s and Ph.D. programs. Recipients of the Eiffel Scholarship receive a monthly stipend, along with coverage for travel expenses, health insurance, and cultural activities, though tuition fees are not included.
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Canada):
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) were established to attract top doctoral students and establish Canada as a global leader in research and higher education. The scholarship, available for doctoral (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) programs at participating Canadian universities, offers $50,000 per year for three years.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program (Multiple Countries):
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program promotes academic and professional growth, as well as cross-cultural understanding.

Fund for Education Abroad (Multiple Countries)
The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented in the U.S. study abroad population. FEA makes transformative international experiences accessible by supporting students of color, community college students, and first-generation college students before, during, and after their participation in study abroad programs.
Belgian American Educational Fund Fellowships (Belgium)
The Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF) invites applications for fellowships for advanced study or research during the 2024-2025 academic year at a Belgian university or institution of higher education.
Freeman Asia (Asia)
Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provide scholarships to U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Freeman-ASIA awards are need-based and help cover the costs of the study abroad program, including airfare, living expenses, local transportation, and books.
The George J. Mitchell Scholarships (Ireland)
The Senator George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, an initiative of the US-Ireland Alliance, is a competitive postgraduate award that selects twelve Mitchell Scholars each year for one year of study in Ireland or Northern Ireland in any field. The scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, a stipend for living expenses, and travel, covering the academic year from September to May.
The Marshall Scholarship (UK)
Marshall Scholarships fund young Americans of high academic ability to pursue graduate degrees in the United Kingdom. Up to 50 Americans are selected each year to study at UK universities in any field. The scholarship covers university fees, living expenses, an annual book grant, thesis grant, research and travel grants, and airfare to and from the U.S.
Boren Awards (Selected Countries)
Boren Awards provide funding for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to pursue studies, research, and language learning in regions critical to U.S. interests. Award amounts are determined by the length of study abroad, with up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only), up to $12,000 for domestic language study, up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks, and up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks abroad.
Rotary Foundation Global Study Grants (Multiple Countries)
The Rotary Foundation offers scholarship funding through Global Grant scholarships, which support graduate-level coursework or research for one to four academic years.
The minimum budget for a global grant scholarship is $30,000, which can cover expenses like passports/visas, vaccinations, travel, school supplies, tuition, and room and board.
Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford University (UK)
The Rhodes Scholarships are prestigious postgraduate awards for exceptional students, including U.S. citizens, to study at the University of Oxford.
A Rhodes Scholarship covers all University and College fees, a living stipend of £18,180 per year (AY 2022/23), a settling-in allowance, health insurance, visa costs, and two economy-class flights to and from the UK for the start and end of studies at Oxford.
