Introducing the ASC Leiden Visiting Fellowship
Applications are now open for the 2025 African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) Visiting Fellowship Programme.The ASCL is the sole multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands entirely dedicated to the study of Africa. It operates as an interfaculty institute of Leiden University.

The ASCL is currently accepting fellowship applications for 2025. Each fellowship spans a period of 90 days, with options for:
— January-February-March
— April-May-June
— September-October-November
Requirements
To qualify for a Visiting Research Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
— Hold a PhD degree at the time of application
— Have conducted research, either aspart of their PhD or in subsequent projects, with a focus on Africa
— Be actively pursuing an academic/research career
— Have recent publications (books, book chapters, and/or journal articles) that meet international standards
— Be prepared to return to their country of citizenship and/or current residence upon completing the fellowship, in accordance with visa regulations
Benefits
A research fellowship includes:
— A return ticket (economy class)
Living expenses coverage (fixed amount).
Accommodation in Leiden: Each fellow is provided with a single bed/sitting room.
The kitchen and bathroom are shared with a maximum of two other fellows (male/female).

Rooms are located on the first floor, with the landlord and landlady residing on the ground floor.
If the provided accommodation is unsuitable for the fellow (e.g., if they wish to travel with a partner or child), they are responsible for finding alternative lodging in Leiden or nearby.
The fellowship/institute does not cover the cost of alternative accommodation, and the institute cannot assist in the search for such accommodation.
Medical/liability insurance (please note that this insurance does not cover the cost of treatment for pre-existing medical conditions).
Access to (shared) office facilities and library resources.
Upon Selection:
Selected fellows will be accommodated according to their preferred fellowship period indicated on the application form, whenever possible.

They will receive the necessary documents for a Schengen visa application. Fellows are responsible for their visa applications.
Fellows are expected to be physically present at the Centre in Leiden for at least 20 hours per week.
Travel abroad for seminars or work visits is allowed after consultation with the Institute, but travel costs during the fellowship are the responsibility of the fellow.
Fellows are expected to give at least one seminar during their stay, organized by the relevant CRG with which they are associated.
