About Luce/ACLS Travel Grants

Eligibility
Applicants must be either graduate students enrolled in a PhD program at an accredited university in the United States or Canada, or contingent faculty at any career stage affiliated with a university in the United States or Canada.

Contingent faculty must either hold a PhD from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada, or be a US or Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or work-authorized individual with a PhD from any accredited institution by the application deadline.
Applicants must have a working knowledge of Chinese or another language relevant to Chinese studies (e.g., Tibetan, Uyghur). Tenure-track and tenured faculty are not eligible for this grant.
Budget and Duration
The grant provides $5,000 for travel within a 12-month period. Other sources of support may be accepted during this time.
Travel can occur at any time during these 12 months, and multiple trips are allowed. The grant period must start between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025.
Grant funds can be used for travel-related expenses (e.g., air and ground transportation, visas, living costs), contacting scholars in Chinese-language communities, and accessing databases, collections, and archives (e.g., permits, fees).
Additional Information
Selection criteria for the grant include the research design and significance of the project to the field of China studies, the necessity of travel for the project, the feasibility of the proposed plan of work, and the institutional resources available to the scholar.
