Introducing the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University.
Makerere University Management and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program have extended their partnership for the second phase of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, running from 2023 to 2034.
This phase, located at Makerere University’s main campus in Kampala, Uganda, will offer 1000 scholarships over a decade for both undergraduate (Bachelor’s degree) and graduate (Master’s degree) academic programs.
Scholarships are granted to academically gifted young men and women from Sub-Saharan Africa who encounter financial obstacles in pursuing their academic studies.

Makerere University is excited to announce the inaugural cohort of 95 undergraduate and 5 Master’s scholarship opportunities for nationals, refugees, internally displaced youth, and international students joining Makerere University in the Academic Year 2024/2025 under the Private Sponsorship Scheme of Makerere University Undergraduate:
To apply for the Program at Makerere University, applicants must meet the following conditions:
Qualify for admission at Makerere University’s main campus under the Private Sponsorship Scheme. Therefore, all applicants should submit an application for admission at Makerere.
– Once admitted to Makerere University’s main campus under the Private Sponsorship Scheme (when advertised), your scholarship application at Makerere University will be considered during the selection process.
– Must have finished Advanced level education (or its equivalent) in an African country.
The applicant should present evidence of significant financial hardship.
-Should not hold any other scholarship, including the Government Scholarship.
-Should not have finished any undergraduate studies.
– Must have served as a leader and have a history of community service.
– The applicant should be 28 years of age or younger at the application deadline.
– The categories of Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and Students with Disabilities should be 32 years of age or younger at the application deadline.
Candidate must meet the admission requirements
For the Master’s degree program at Makerere University’s main campus.
Thus, all candidates should apply for admission at Makerere University’s main campus through the Private Sponsorship Scheme (when it is advertised).
Once accepted to Makerere University’s main campus, your application for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University will be reviewed during the selection process.
The applicant must have earned a Bachelor’s degree in an African country. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program scholarships are available only to individuals experiencing substantial financial hardship.
Applicants must show leadership potential and a history of community service.
Should not hold any other scholarships or have enrolled in or completed any other Master’s degree
Additionally, applicants must be under 35 years old when applying for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program scholarship.
The categories of Refugees and Students with Disabilities must be under 40 years old at the application deadline for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program scholarship.
A refugee applicant must be a recognized and registered refugee, with proof (refugee attestation) attached to the application form.
