U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program Overview
Established in 2014, the U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program (USFSIP) provides undergraduate students with a distinctive opportunity to engage in U.S. diplomacy through merit- and needs-based internships.

This program is designed to offer both professional and academic growth while exploring career paths within the Department of State.
Program Structure and Highlights
The USFSIP consists of two paid summer internships, each lasting ten weeks. Participants will first spend a summer in Washington, D.C., where they will undergo a comprehensive orientation and gain hands-on policy experience at the Department of State.
The following summer, interns will be placed at a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas.
— First Summer (2025): Interns begin with a three-week orientation that includes U.S. diplomatic history, writing skills, and professional development. This is followed by seven weeks of substantive policy work within the Department of State in Washington, D.C.
— Second Summer (2026): Interns will continue their experience with a ten-week assignment at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad, offering a global perspective on diplomatic operations.

Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the USFSIP, candidates must meet the following requirements:
— Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or those owing allegiance to the U.S.
— Current Undergraduate Status: Eligible candidates must be enrolled in an undergraduate program with a minimum GPA of 3.2. They should be rising sophomores or juniors who will continue their education through spring 2026.
— Financial Need: Applicants must demonstrate financial need either through their FAFSA Student Aid Index or a Statement of Financial Need.
— Security Clearance: Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.
Application Process
— Application Period: Applications are open from August 28, 2024, to September 8, 2024.
— Salary: The position pays $19.33 per hour, classified under GS-04 pay scale and grade.
— Location: Internships are available at various Department of State posts, both domestic and overseas.
— Required Documents: Applicants must submit their transcripts, a resume created in USAJOBS, a Statement of Interest, and a Statement of Financial Need. While not mandatory, submitting FAFSA summaries is recommended.
— Evaluation: Applications are reviewed by a selection panel that considers academic performance, financial need, and interest in foreign affairs.
Additional Requirements
Between the two internship summers, participants must maintain their GPA and take the Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT) to remain eligible for the program.
