About the Stellenbosch University Fully Funded GEM Scholarships for 2025
The Graduate School of Economics and Management Sciences (GEM) at Stellenbosch University is now accepting applications for its 2025 scholarships.
The school is offering two distinguished funding opportunities for its full-time doctoral program:
- GEM Elite Doctoral Scholarships: These prestigious scholarships offer R200,000 per year for three years.

2 . GEM Doctoral Scholarships: These scholarships provide R150,000 per year for three years.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a scholarship, candidates must meet the following requirements:
— Candidates must hold a master’s degree in a relevant field or, in exceptional cases, an equivalent qualification.
— Applicants should have completed their master’s program with a grade of 65% or higher.
— The program starts in January, and candidates must be under forty years old.
— Applications will only be considered if they align with one of the faculty’s research themes.
— All who meet these criteria will be considered.
How to Apply
To apply for the 2025 cohort at the Graduate School, follow these steps:
- Review Eligibility Criteria: Make sure you meet all the eligibility requirements before applying.
- Download and Complete the Application Form:
Download the application form and fill out all required sections. You will need to write a motivational letter (maximum one A4 page) explaining your suitability for the scholarship and a research concept note (no length limit) on the topic you plan to study during your doctoral program. Use the 2024 Research Themes to guide your choice of topic. If your topic does not align with these themes, ensure it matches the active research areas in one of the faculty’s academic departments.

- Compile Supporting Documents: Along with the completed application form, submit the following supporting documents
- Academic Records: Provide detailed information on all previous and current tertiary studies. Submit certified copies of diploma/degree certificates and official transcripts. Please note that academic records from student portals are not acceptable.
ID or Passport: Submit a certified copy of your ID (for South African applicants) or passport (for international applicants), including the photo page.
Proof of English Competency: Provide evidence of qualifications from institutions where English is the language of instruction or proof of English language proficiency. This evidence must be no older than 24 months from the date of application.
Submission of Your Application:
Submit the completed and signed application forms, along with the supporting documents, to the Graduate School Office via email (GEM@sun.ac.za). Late applications will not be accepted.
Inform Your Referees:
Make sure your three referees are aware that their recommendation letters, which should address your ability to complete doctoral studies, need to be sent directly to the Graduate School via email (GEM@sun.ac.za).
