Applicants are advised not to send follow-up inquiries.
Due to differences in academic calendars between the Southern and Northern hemispheres, recipients will participate in a specific program in South Africa from February 2024 to July 2024.
This program includes online French courses offered by the Alliances Françaises network and potential internships with French companies and organizations in South Africa, contingent upon available opportunities and individual profiles.
Eligible Study Programs
The scholarship supports Master’s or PhD programs at French higher education institutions located in France.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the France–South Africa Scholarship Program, applicants must:
— Be born on or after January 1, 1994.
— Hold citizenship from South Africa, Lesotho, or Malawi.
— Be enrolled in a French higher education institution to pursue a Master’s degree or PhD within the stipulated timeframe for obtaining the degree.
The scholarship duration corresponds to the necessary period spent in France to complete the degree requirements.

For Master’s degrees, the scholarship duration ranges from 10 to 22 months, aligning with the typical two-year program duration.
In specific cases, such as graduates with Honours Bachelor’s degrees, students may apply directly to M2 (the second year of the Master’s Program).
Admission decisions rest solely with the hosting higher education institution.
At the end of the first academic year, the Embassy of France assesses students’ progress to determine continuation into the second year of the Master’s program.
For PhDs, the scholarship covers a maximum of 3 years. Renewal requires annual justification of research progress.
In the case of PhDs under co-supervision/cotutelle, specific periods in France must be outlined.
The scholarship is applicable only during these periods spent in France.
If the curriculum includes coursework outside France, applicants must detail these requirements and intentions during the application process for both PhD and Master’s degrees.
