The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of British Columbia is now accepting applications for Master’s degrees for the Fall 2025 intake in the following programs:

Faculty of Land and Food Systems
— Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE)

Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the UBC MasterCard Scholarship Master’s Degree Program at the University of British Columbia, applicants must:
— Have completed a Bachelor’s degree
— Not already hold a graduate or PhD degree
— Be 35 years old or younger at the time of application (born in 1988 or later)
— Be a citizen or refugee of a Sub-Saharan African country
— Have lived a significant portion of their life in a Sub-Saharan African country
— Demonstrate economically disadvantaged financial circumstances
— Have achieved academic excellence under challenging conditions
— Show leadership qualities or potential
— Exhibit a commitment to giving back to their home community
— Require a Canadian study permit to study in Canada
— Not have claimed or intend to claim asylum or protected person status after arriving in Canada
— Commit to returning to Africa to apply their training and skills for the benefit of others
— Apply for a Master’s degree in one of the following faculties and programs at the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus

The UBC MasterCard Scholarship covers only the expenses of admitted scholars.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents are not eligible to apply for this award.
Funds from the UBC MasterCard Scholarship cannot be used to pursue programs at other academic institutions.
Benefits of the UBC MasterCard Scholarship 2025
Selected students will receive a scholarship that covers all expenses related to earning a degree, including travel, tuition, textbooks, housing, food, and living costs.

Additionally, recipients will receive comprehensive support in finance, academics, social engagement, and post-graduation assistance, which will help develop essential experiences and skills for academic success.
Required Documents for the Scholarship
To apply, candidates must be prepared to submit the following document:
— UBC MasterCard Scholarship Program Application Form.
— Personal Statement: Answer each question within the provided word limit. Responses must be typed and submitted; essay format is not acceptable.
— Submit a CV/Resume: Include all relevant education and work experience.
— Provide Two Reference Letters: These should be on official letterhead.
— Transcripts: Attach a legible copy of your unofficial transcripts. If your transcripts are in a language other than English, you must also provide a translation.
— Submit the Following: Checklist, Application Form, Personal Statements, CV/Resume, two reference letters on official letterhead, transcripts, and signed declaration.
Personal Statements
- Please tell us your story: What is important to you and reflects who you are? (200-300 words maximum)
- Describe a recent, meaningful involvement in your community: Include your role in the activity/ies. (200-300 words maximum)
- Why are you interested in studying at UBC: How do you see your chosen program at UBC helping you achieve your long-term career and personal goals? What drives you to reach these goals? (200-300 words maximum)
Persistence is essential for completing this application. Please describe a situation where you had to overcome a significant obstacle or challenge to achieve a goal. How did you handle this challenge, and what did you learn from the experience? (200-300 words maximum)
