Introducing the UN – Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2025: Fully Funded
Applications are now open for the 2025 United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship.
This fellowship is designed to provide government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing countries with advanced training in ocean affairs, the law of the sea, and related fields such as marine science to support management frameworks.
Fellows will gain knowledge about international legal frameworks, key issues, and best practices in ocean affairs, become acquainted with the United Nations’ work, and enhance their professional skills.

Additionally, fellows will conduct individual research under academic supervision and write a thesis on a topic of their choice.
Upon completing the fellowship, participants are expected to return to their home countries and apply their enhanced knowledge and experience to assist in formulating comprehensive ocean.

This may include designing, implementing, and evaluating specific improvement projects.
Benefits include a monthly stipend for the duration of the fellowship, covering both their time in New York and, for fellows participating in the 9-month program phase at a second institution, their stay there as well.

Could be stipend begins from the date of departure from their home country and continues until the fellowship’s completion, including up to two days of travel time via the most direct air route, following United Nations travel guidelines
It is not a salary or honorarium and does not cover ongoing expenses for fellows or their families back home.
Fellowship Structure, Curriculum, and Deliverables
This 9-month Fellowship Program consists of two consecutive phases that offer Fellows advanced and customized research and training opportunities in their chosen fields:
Phase One: 3-month Research and Training, typically conducted between March/April and June at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Phase Two: 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study, typically conducted between July and December at one of the prestigious participating Host Institutions, guided by subject matter expert(s) renowned for their expertise in the Fellows’ chosen field of study.
The deliverables of the Fellowship Program include:
A 100-page written thesis
A presentation of the research findings
An ocean governance matrix
