About the International Program in Public Health Leadership
The University of Washington is inviting applications for the 2024 International Public Health Leadership Program.
The International Program in Public Health Leadership (IPPHL) is an eight-month initiative designed for emerging leaders working with or alongside African Ministries of Health.

A flagship program of the Evans School at the University of Washington, IPPHL aims to enhance the policy and leadership skills of participants, enabling them to develop and implement effective public policy solutions and transform health systems.
The curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of policy analysis, evidence and evaluation, implementation, and personal leadership development.
This program is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is hosted by the Evans School of Public Policy & Governance in partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership.

Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the 2024 International Program in Public Health Leadership (IPPHL), you must meet the following criteria:
— Be a mid-career public health professional from Africa, working in government, for a government initiative or partner, or an entity at the federal, regional, state, or provincial level.
— Have responsibility for managing public health programs, including supervisory duties for individual staff or a team.
— Be accountable for the performance of public health programs and/or for managing front-line health workers.

— Hold an advanced degree related to public health, development, policy, or be a medical professional.
— Be a citizen and resident of an African country.
— Possess strong English language skills and the ability to articulate various policy or program implementation challenges in public health.
Benefits of the International Program in Public Health Leadership
The International Public Health Leadership Program (IPPHL) strives to cover direct costs associated with the program, including lodging and airfare for the two-week Seattle Residency and Capstone Seminar.
However, participants are responsible for certain expenses, such as visa fees and internet access. Financial support for these costs will be provided either during or after the completion of the program.
Required Documents
- Complete the online application form.
- Answer three short-answer questions, each limited to 1,500 characters. The topics are as follows (please refer to the application for full questions and expectations):
— Describe how you have used leadership and management skills to effect change in the past (or in your current role), and discuss the personal characteristics that help you navigate leadership challenges and influence change.
— Identify a critical challenge you face in your position or health program that you would like to address as your policy problem during the IPPHL.
— Explain how the leadership, policy analysis, and influence skills learned during this program will support your career aspirations.
3. Upload your resume or CV in PDF format.
4. Upload a Statement of Release from your supervisor in PDF format. This statement should be from someone with the authority to approve your time off for the in-person and virtual portions of the program, some of which may take place during work hours.
5. Upload a Letter of Recommendation from your employer or supervisor in PDF format.
Your Letter of Recommendation Should Include:
— Several ways that a leadership and policy program like IPPHL would support your professional development.
— One strength or specific talent you would contribute to the program.
— Two ways your participation in IPPHL would benefit your larger team and organization.
— A statement from your organization expressing willingness to engage in program elements that require their input, such as surveys.
International Program in Public Health Leadership Timelines
— April 16 – May 20 (8 weeks): Policy Intensive Online, Distance Learning Format, including two hours of live course sessions per week.
— June 12 – 29 (2.5 weeks): In-Person Class Sessions, Mentoring, and Professional Networking, held at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA (all accommodation provided).
— July 16 – September 2 (10 weeks): Post-Residency Enrichment Intersession, Distance Learning Format.
— September 3 – 6 (5 days): In-Person Class Sessions and Capstone Seminar, location TBD.
